About This Project

Koala partnered with the Orion Publishing Group to craft a stunning animated commercial for The Island Swimmer, the moving debut novel by much-loved TV presenter Lorraine Kelly. This project brought together the elegance of literary storytelling with the expressive power of hand-drawn animation, creating a visual identity that felt as intimate and authentic as the book itself. From the very beginning, our team worked in close creative alignment with the original cover illustrator to ensure the animation honoured the tone, palette, and personality of the source artwork.

With a focus on natural motion and seamless brushwork, the animation flowed like a living painting, subtle and soulful, and evocative of the novel’s Scottish island setting. Every frame was designed to reflect the emotional undercurrents of the story, themes of homecoming, healing, and the tides of change. The visual style echoed traditional illustration techniques, capturing the painterly essence of the book while enhancing it with the depth and fluidity of motion.

To complement the animation, we developed a bespoke sound design that transported audiences into the heart of the story. Gently layered audio textures, rolling waves, distant seabirds, and a contemplative musical score were intricately woven into the piece to enrich the sensory experience. The soundscape was carefully composed to support the visuals without overwhelming them, offering viewers a quiet sense of immersion that lingered beyond the final frame.

This animated commercial was broadcast nationally on television and adapted across social media platforms as part of a wider campaign to launch The Island Swimmer. It not only showcased Koala’s ability to transform static illustration into cinematic movement but also demonstrated the emotional storytelling power that animation can bring to book marketing. The result was a campaign that felt both artistically distinctive and emotionally resonant, breathing new life into the page and bringing Lorraine Kelly’s literary debut to audiences across the UK.
