About This Project

Koala collaborated with the publishers Penguin to produce a compelling animation and TV commercial for The Suspect, the gripping second novel by renowned TV presenter and barrister Rob Rinder. This animated project set out to translate the book’s tense courtroom drama and media intrigue into a visually arresting narrative, using bespoke illustration and motion design to bring the story to life. The final animated advert captured the essence of the novel’s high-stakes legal battles, celebrity culture, and psychological suspense.

Working from original illustrated concepts, our animation team developed a distinctive visual style that reflected the mood and tone of the book. Each frame was crafted with sharp, expressive linework and a cinematic colour palette to mirror the tension and pace of the story. The animation followed junior barrister Adam Green as he navigates a gripping case surrounding the live on-air death of a beloved TV host. The seamless transitions and expressive character design delivered a richly animated storytelling experience that felt true to the novel’s voice and genre.

To complement the visuals, we composed a bespoke sound design that deepened the emotional and dramatic weight of the TV commercial. The soundscape blended ambient courtroom textures, urban tension, and a suspenseful original score, adding immersive layers to the animated sequence. This sound design elevated the impact of the animation, allowing the social media video and broadcast edit to resonate powerfully across all platforms.

The final animated TV commercial was broadcast across national networks and repurposed as a high-performing social media video campaign, introducing The Suspect to a wide audience of readers and thriller fans. This project showcased Koala’s expertise in illustration-based animation, literary adaptation, and multimedia storytelling, demonstrating how a book launch can be transformed into a dynamic visual campaign across television, digital, and social platforms.
